The approach of 2020 has everyone "wrapping" their decade. Numbers are weird though; people are celebrating 10 years, but really only considering nine. That is, 2010-2019. So for my 🎊 Top Albums of the Decade 🎊, I'm going all the way back to 2009.
One of the constants in my life this decade was music. I mostly listen while I work, and that has an effect on what styles I most often play. But music is a friend when all else fails. It's there when you've got no money, or when having finally gotten it, you realize it doesn't fix your problems. It's there when people hurt you, or when you don't know how to look after yourself. It's a safety net. It cries with you, inspires you to kick butt. It's beautiful. A connection with other wandering souls we may never bodily meet. It's a true blessing.
Top accolades go to Jimmy Eat World's Surviving. It could be recency bias, but to me this is their best album of the decade, and the most meaningful for me, meeting me in a place where I'm trying not to merely survive, but find a way to live.
Honorable mention to River’s Arms by Balmorhea, which I discovered in the past decade, and which basically tops the list, but which was released in 2008.
